Ivye is a place where cultures and religions intersect. This is a unique place where Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Islam and Judaism are united. Here you will find religious buildings related to these four faiths.
How did it happen? What churches are there today, and which ones will we never see again? Why do Jews need four synagogues and how did a mosque appear on the Ivye land? You will find answers to all these and other questions during the excursion “Ivye Religious Buildings”.
Description of the main objects on the route
Ivye
Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul
The church was built in 1491-1495 in the Gothic style with funds from the owner of Ivye, Peter Yanovich Montigirdovich. In the 17th century, the new owner Nikolai Kishka rebuilt the church in the early Baroque style and founded a Bernardine monastery near it. The church acquired its current appearance in the 18th century thanks to investments by Alena Oginskaya. Today, the church has preserved its original interiors, including six stone Baroque altars, a wooden pulpit and confessionals, as well as an organ built in 1899. Notable for tourists is the sculpture of Christ the Savior, which was installed near the church in 2002.
Mosque
The mosque was built in 1882 in the Art Nouveau style with features of folk wooden architecture at the expense of the owner of the Ivye estate – Elfriede Zmoyskaya, as evidenced by the memorial plaque placed inside the temple. It is located in an area where Belarusian Tatars have lived for several centuries. Before the Great Patriotic War, it was a separate settlement called Muravshchizna. The mosque stands out among the low-rise buildings with a high tower-minaret. The temple was not closed throughout its entire existence and was the only Muslim shrine operating on the territory of the BSSR. It operates for its intended purpose to this day.
Synagogue building
Of the complex of four synagogues, only two have survived today. The larger of the buildings has retained the original façade: arched windows, pilasters and a figured completion of the pediment. The synagogue was built in the eclectic style at the beginning of the 20th century, today it is used as a sports school. The synagogue buildings are silent witnesses of the life of the Jewish community of Ivye, which no longer exists today.
Church of the Holy Martyr Infant Gabriel of Belostok, Slutsk
The Orthodox Church is the youngest temple in Ivye, consecrated in honor of the infant Gabriel of Belostok on October 10, 1995. The temple houses the Icon of Gabriel of Belostok with a particle of his relics, as well as the Icon of Our Lady of Kazan, which has been in space. The construction was carried out at the expense of parishioners in the difficult 1990s, which explains the modest appearance of the temple.
