Костел Святого Николая

Church of Saint Nicholas in ag. Geranyony

The first Catholic church of Saint Nicholas in Geranyony was built in 1411 by the will of Prince Zhigimont, the son of Keistut. In 1519 it was rebuilt into a stone one under the guidance of Albrecht Gashtold. It was in this church that Albrecht’s son Stanislav Gashtold was married to Barbara Radziwill. Perhaps here in 1547, Barbara secretly married the Grand Duke of Lithuania Sigismund Augustus, the future king of Poland.
The stone church was erected opposite the Geranyony castle and had an important defensive function. It was surrounded by a stone wall, and served as a kind of frontal fortification, the defense of which did not allow the enemy to penetrate into the complex from the side of the entrance tower and fire at the castle from mortars.
After the destruction of the temple in a fire in the middle of the 17th century, its restoration in the late Baroque style began, which lasted from 1771 to 1779. However, over the next centuries it was completed more than once (this is how the side sacristy and the vestibule appeared). The facade was also reconstructed. As a result, this temple clearly illustrates the transition from Baroque to Classicism, harmoniously combining features of both styles.
In 2007, the architectural monument received the status of historical and cultural value.
