Ruins of the castle in ag. Geranyony
The appearance of the stone castle in Geranyony is associated with Albrecht Gashtold: its presence was an indispensable condition for obtaining the count’s title, to which the owner of this town was so eager. The Geranyony Castle entered the history, first of all, due to the fact that it was here that the Grand Duke Sigismund II August met Barbara Radziwill, the young widow of the last of the Gashtold family.
Despite the simplicity of the layout (tetrahedron with round towers at the corners), the Geranyony castle was considered one of the most beautiful in the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. However, it was also a very serious fortification: in addition to stone walls more than a meter thick, it was protected by an earthen rampart and two ditches filled with water. However, in the 17th century, the Geranyony castle was destroyed. Only small fragments of stone walls and earthen fortifications, heavily overgrown with bushes, have survived to this day.
